Campaign for Angling

SNAP Update
The Scottish National Angling Programme began in earnest at the beginning of September with the appointment of Ian Robertson as manager of the programme.

The Web Based Club
Since Ian’s appointment a new internet based national club for young anglers has been developed. A competition, inviting young people to create a name and logo for the club, has been launched in conjunction with the Glasgow Angling Centre. This has been advertised through the national and angling press and throughout Scotland’s secondary schools. (Further details from SCAET office 0131 335 0200)

Teachers and pupils from several of the Angus Secondary schools have agreed to pilot the development and design of the web site, setting the principle that the young people of Scotland will run and retain ownership of their national angling club.

Scotland’s fisheries and tackle retailers have been invited to provide content for the web site and also to offer discounted prices for club members. In this way, we hope club membership will make angling more affordable for current and new young anglers.
SNAP Induction Centres

Angling, educational, tourist based, and charitable organisations from across the country have been invited to become SNAP Induction Centres where young people, adults and tourists alike can access information regarding casting and angling instruction for sea, course and game angling as well as any other angling information through the SNAP web site and its links.

Qualifications/careers
With the growth of the sport being directly related to the number of volunteer and professional instructors available, SNAP has initiated meetings with the governing bodies of sea, game, course and still water angling to discuss creating a national coach education structure to grow the numbers of qualified instructors throughout the country. This in house structure will then lead on to access to vocational and academic qualifications offered by Scotland’s land based colleges in conjunction with LANTRA. Not only will this increase the number of trained volunteers, it will also provide a clear progression for young people wishing to follow a career in angling related industries.
